Instituto de Energia e Ambiente da USP oferece bolsa para jovens profissionais com doutorado

Bolsa Fullbright NEXUS para jovens profissionais (pesquisadores e professores) já com doutorado.

After two highly successful iterations of the Fulbright NEXUS Program, it is with great pleasure for me to announce that a partnership between the U.S. Department of State’s Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs (ECA), the Fulbright Commission for Educational Exchange between the U.S. and Brazil, and the Brazilian Ministry of Education, Agency for Support and Evaluation of Graduate Studies (CAPES) will allow us to offer the Fulbright NEXUS Scholar Program in 2014.

This third cycle of NEXUS will allow 20 outstanding applied scholars and practitioners from the Western Hemisphere to participate in a Fulbright exchange experience, a series of in-person seminar meetings and ongoing virtual communication to support the scholars’ collaborative research. Program activities will commence in June 2014 and conclude in May 2016. Five of the scholars will be selected from the United States, five from Brazil, and the remaining ten will come from other countries in the region.

The program will continue to provide a platform for program participants to engage in collaborative thinking, analysis, problem-solving and multi-disciplinary research convened around a theme of transnational relevance. “Climate Change and Adaptation Strategies” will remain NEXUS’ thematic focus as scholars work in research teams in the following areas:

• Renewable Energy, including Micro-Grid Innovations;
• Social and Behavioral Adaptation to Climate Change;
• Measuring Climate Change and its Impact (Metrics and Standards);
• Climate Change and Biodiversity;
• Climate Change and Food and Water Security

A slightly revised program structure will allow scholars to focus exclusively on their collaborative work in multidisciplinary research teams and not pursue an individual research project as in past NEXUS experiences. An initial orientation meeting will be held in Brasilia in August 2014, which will provide the Lead Scholars and research teams the opportunity to launch the collaboration and establish guidelines and goals. The research teams will then share progress at a mid-term meeting in June 2015, finally convening for a third and final meeting in Washington, DC in May 2016 to share the results of their collaborative work and report on their accomplishments.

We are extremely fortunate to have two luminary scholars at the helm of NEXUS III. Dr. Daniel M Kammen will return as our U.S. Lead Scholar and co-lead this third NEXUS experience with Dr. Sergio Pacca from Brazil. Dr. Pacca is Associate Professor at the School of Arts, Sciences and Humanities of the University of São Paulo (USP). He teaches in the Environmental Management Undergraduate Program and in the Energy and Sustainability Graduate Programs at USP. He is the director of the Research Group on Carbon Emissions Policy and Regulation, and member of the International Society for Industrial Ecology.

The 2014 Fulbright NEXUS application deadline is April 1, 2014. For more information on the program, please visit http://eca.state.gov/fulbright/fulbright-programs/program-summaries/fulbright-nexus and http://www.cies.org/NEXUS. CIES will be following up with each of you and sending promotional materials for you to share with colleagues who might be interested in applying to the program. A NEXUS outreach webinar hosted by CIES and NEXUS Lead Scholars is scheduled for January 2014. CIES will share this information with you once a date has been confirmed. Please, help us spread the word out and encourage those in your inner circles to apply for this transformative experience.

We are tremendously proud of the NEXUS program and look forward to seeing the achievements of the next cohort. I would like to specifically thank those of you who made notable efforts to reach out to key decision makers to advocate for a continuation of the NEXUS program. Those efforts were invaluable in this process.

On behalf of ECA, thank you for your continued support of and belief in this very unique Fulbright initiative.
