Essas atividades demandam muita energia e emitem di\u00f3xido de carbono, o CO2, como parte do processo de produ\u00e7\u00e3o principal.<\/p>\n<p>Para auxiliar a reduzir as emiss\u00f5es nessas \u00e1reas, pesquisadores da Universidade de Melbourne, na Austr\u00e1lia, desenvolveram uma tecnologia de captura e armazenamento de carbono (CCS, em ingl\u00eas) que pode ser integrada a processos industriais. Enquanto o CO2 \u00e9 produzido, o dispositivo transforma o g\u00e1s e mant\u00e9m o carbono em estado s\u00f3lido, o que evita novas emiss\u00f5es na atmosfera.<\/p>\n<p>A equipe usou estrat\u00e9gias de qu\u00edmica t\u00e9rmica que s\u00e3o utilizados pela ind\u00fastria. Com o m\u00e9todo \u201ccoluna de bolhas\u201d, metal l\u00edquido \u00e9 aquecido entre 100\u00baC e 120\u00baC. O di\u00f3xido de carbono \u00e9 injetado no metal l\u00edquido e as bolhas de g\u00e1s sobem como se fosse uma ta\u00e7a de champanhe. Conforme elas se movimentam pelo metal l\u00edquido, a mol\u00e9cula de g\u00e1s se divide para formar flocos de carbono s\u00f3lido \u2014 essa rea\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 quase instant\u00e2nea.<\/p>\n<p>De acordo com um dos pesquisadores envolvido no estudo, Torben Daeneke, \u201cnosso novo m\u00e9todo aproveita o poder dos metais l\u00edquidos, mas o design foi modificado para uma integra\u00e7\u00e3o mais suave em processos industriais comuns. Al\u00e9m de ser mais simples para ganhar escala, a nova tecnologia \u00e9 radicalmente mais eficiente e pode decompor o CO2 em carbono em um instante\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Os resultados positivos do experimento levaram a um pedido de patente provis\u00f3rio para a tecnologia e os pesquisadores assinaram um contrato de 2,6 milh\u00f5es de d\u00f3lares australianos com a empresa de tecnologia ambiental australiana ABR, que comercializa tecnologias para descarbonizar as ind\u00fastrias de cimento e a\u00e7o.<\/p>\n<p>Iniciativas de CCS s\u00e3o conhecidas por investirem em comprimir o g\u00e1s em um l\u00edquido e injetar a subst\u00e2ncia no subsolo, mas esse tipo de procedimento depende de investimentos em engenharia e pode gerar problemas ambientais. Algumas abordagens de CCS tamb\u00e9m s\u00e3o criticadas pelo uso intensivo de energia e por ser muito caro.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTransformar o CO2 em s\u00f3lido evita poss\u00edveis problemas de vazamento e o bloqueia de forma segura e por tempo indefinido.
