Mas, na maioria das vezes, o que vem em seguida \u00e9 mais ponto de interroga\u00e7\u00e3o dizendo que \u201cn\u00e3o acabou a\u00ed\u201d. \u00c9 por isso que a identifica\u00e7\u00e3o do b\u00f3son de Higgs \u2013 apelidado de \u201cpart\u00edcula de Deus\u201d e confirmado em 2013 \u2013 passa muito longe de ser o ponto final da f\u00edsica de part\u00edculas. Um esfor\u00e7o de centenas de universidades e institui\u00e7\u00f5es de pesquisa ao redor do globo, a USP inclu\u00edda, para levar o ser humano a conhecer aspectos mais \u00edntimos e fundamentais da natureza. E que, de quebra, faz o conhecimento e a tecnologia avan\u00e7arem em muitas frentes. Talvez o mais famoso exemplo disso seja a cria\u00e7\u00e3o da World Wide Web (WWW) em 1989. N\u00e3o que n\u00e3o houvesse motivos para a acalorada comemora\u00e7\u00e3o que se seguiu ap\u00f3s a detec\u00e7\u00e3o do b\u00f3son de Higgs. O feito do Cern, conferindo exist\u00eancia no mundo real ao que era apenas uma teoria prevista na d\u00e9cada de 1960, tem o tamanho da dificuldade que impunha: o b\u00f3son \u2013 que d\u00e1 massa \u00e0s demais part\u00edculas \u2013 s\u00f3 poderia aparecer num cen\u00e1rio de energia extraordin\u00e1ria como o Big Bang, no in\u00edcio do Universo. Ele inclui as for\u00e7as eletromagn\u00e9ticas que a tornam uma parede s\u00f3lida o bastante para que n\u00e3o possamos atravess\u00e1-la. Tamb\u00e9m tem lugar para as for\u00e7as nucleares, que formam elementos pesados como o a\u00e7o a partir da fus\u00e3o nas grandes usinas das estrelas, como o Sol. E d\u00e1 conta de tanto de ondas eletromagn\u00e9ticas, como as de r\u00e1dio, que tornam nossas telecomunica\u00e7\u00f5es poss\u00edveis, como dos raios gama, que podem causar graves danos em nosso DNA. Pr\u00f3tons, n\u00eautrons (e as part\u00edculas ainda menores que os constituem, os quarks), el\u00e9trons e neutrinos s\u00e3o f\u00e9rmions.<\/p>\n<p>J\u00e1 os\u00a0<strong>b\u00f3sons<\/strong>\u00a0s\u00e3o part\u00edculas mediadoras, que transmitem as for\u00e7as (e massa, no caso de Higgs) \u00e0s demais. Apesar de chamadas de part\u00edculas, est\u00e3o mais para campos ao longo dos quais os f\u00e9rmions se deslocam e com os quais interagem. \u201cOs b\u00f3sons fazem a media\u00e7\u00e3o das intera\u00e7\u00f5es. No caso da massa, existe um campo que permeia o Universo e que \u00e9 respons\u00e1vel pelo fato de diferentes part\u00edculas fundamentais terem massas diferentes. Como dois patinadores: se um est\u00e1 com uma bola pesada de boliche, no momento que a joga para outro, \u00e9 empurrado para tr\u00e1s. Se n\u00e3o houvesse gl\u00faons, a for\u00e7a de repuls\u00e3o entre os pr\u00f3tons (que t\u00eam carga positiva) impediria que eles ficassem juntos no n\u00facleo. \u201cO gl\u00faon \u00e9 quem intermedia o que a gente chama de for\u00e7a forte entre os quarks. Gl\u00faons mant\u00eam quarks grudados dentro do pr\u00f3ton e do n\u00eautron, e pr\u00f3tons e n\u00eautrons grudados dentro do n\u00facleo\u201d, resume Marcelo Munhoz.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/section>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-ad8a6dc elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"ad8a6dc\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\">\n<p>Ao todo, s\u00e3o 17 part\u00edculas e suas antipart\u00edculas, de quem diferem apenas pela carga el\u00e9trica de mesmo valor, por\u00e9m oposta. Cada uma delas com suas caracter\u00edsticas bem determinadas \u2013 como carga el\u00e9trica, massa e um n\u00famero chamado\u00a0<em>spin<\/em>\u00a0(algo como a dire\u00e7\u00e3o da rota\u00e7\u00e3o) \u2013 e que fazem os cientistas saber que est\u00e3o lidando com uma e n\u00e3o com outra quando as encontra.<\/p>\n<p>Com dispositivos adequados e em certas condi\u00e7\u00f5es, podemos encontrar isoladas algumas destas part\u00edculas, como el\u00e9trons, pr\u00f3tons e at\u00e9 mesmo neutrinos, que interagem bem pouco com a mat\u00e9ria, sendo por isso extremamente dif\u00edceis de detectar. Outras dessas part\u00edculas, como quarks e gl\u00faons, nos dia de hoje, bem depois do Big Bang, existem apenas confinadas. Quando esse ponto \u201cexplodiu\u201d e o Universo come\u00e7ou a se formar e expandir, n\u00e3o existiam pr\u00f3tons e n\u00eautrons \u201cmontados\u201d, porque era tudo muito denso, com muita energia. Havia uma esp\u00e9cie de sopa, que hoje os cientistas chamam de plasma de quarks (os constituintes de pr\u00f3tons e n\u00eautrons) e gl\u00faons (as part\u00edculas mediadoras que juntam os quarks). \u201cSe formamos esse plasma em laborat\u00f3rio, \u00e9 poss\u00edvel estudar suas propriedades. Podemos entender a evolu\u00e7\u00e3o do Universo, verificando se essas propriedades medidas no laborat\u00f3rio s\u00e3o compat\u00edveis com o Universo se expandindo, por exemplo\u201d, diz Marcelo Munhoz, ao abordar os objetivos do experimento Alice, do LHC, em que atua.<\/p>\n<p>No que diz respeito ao Modelo Padr\u00e3o, tudo isso explica por que, para verific\u00e1-lo experimentalmente, \u00e9 preciso um acelerador t\u00e3o extenso e com a capacidade de gerar tanta energia como o LHC. E que bom, pois uma anula a outra. Se houvesse a mesma quantidade, nem estar\u00edamos aqui\u201d, brinca Marisilvia, ao incluir a assimetria de mat\u00e9ria-antimat\u00e9ria na lista de problemas n\u00e3o resolvidos pelo modelo. Estamos coletando dados desde 2009, mas em tudo que foi medido ainda n\u00e3o foi encontrado nada de supersimetria\u201d, diz Marisilvia.<\/p>\n<p>Outros pontos n\u00e3o contemplados no modelo a serem investigados s\u00e3o a mat\u00e9ria escura e a energia escura. Ambas se fazem conhecer somente pelos seus efeitos. A mat\u00e9ria escura deve existir porque s\u00f3 a massa da mat\u00e9ria vis\u00edvel n\u00e3o seria suficiente para manter as gal\u00e1xias unidas como s\u00e3o. J\u00e1 a energia escura deve ser a causa da expans\u00e3o acelerada do Universo, um fen\u00f4meno constatado, mas n\u00e3o explicado. O Big Bang explica a expans\u00e3o \u2013 mas se n\u00e3o houvesse nenhuma energia atuando, essa expans\u00e3o estaria se desacelerando, por uma quest\u00e3o de in\u00e9rcia. E diz: \u201cQueremos construir uma m\u00e1quina que vai revelar os mist\u00e9rios do Universo, suas estruturas fundamentais\u201d. A\u00ed eles falam sobre isso, fazem sua apresenta\u00e7\u00e3o, deixam todo mundo empolgado, \u201cafinal \u00e9 muito bacana falar daquilo que \u00e9 fundamental na natureza\u201d, diz Marisilvia Donadelli. De 20 a 30 anos, 9 bilh\u00f5es, a economia oscilando no mundo todo\u2026\u2019\u201d Mas o fato \u00e9 que os cientistas conseguiram convenc\u00ea-los e dar in\u00edcio ao esfor\u00e7o que, na \u00e9poca, incluiu um grupo de 200 universidades e institui\u00e7\u00f5es de pesquisa ao redor do mundo. \u201cO que tamb\u00e9m pode ser um fator limitante, afinal governos e suas orienta\u00e7\u00f5es mudam o tempo todo\u2026 Mas \u00e9 s\u00f3 assim que podemos trabalhar nessa \u00e1rea, para construir um projeto desse porte, colocar isso numa caverna embaixo da Terra, \u00e9 uma obra de engenharia que demanda uma quantidade de pessoas e de tecnologia absurda\u201d, explica Marisilvia.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"elementor-element elementor-element-40a9c4f elementor-widget elementor-widget-text-editor\" data-id=\"40a9c4f\" data-element_type=\"widget\" data-widget_type=\"text-editor.default\">\n<div class=\"elementor-widget-container\">\n<div class=\"elementor-text-editor elementor-clearfix\">\n<p>O impacto do Cern em outras \u00e1reas do conhecimento vai al\u00e9m a cria\u00e7\u00e3o do protocolo WWW, que se iniciou com necessidade de fazer troca de dados por uma intranet no laborat\u00f3rio. O Cern tem a tradi\u00e7\u00e3o de disseminar o conhecimento mas tamb\u00e9m de compartilhar a tecnologia. Ent\u00e3o cada detector trabalha em um aspecto espec\u00edfico\u201d, explica Marisilvia Donadelli.<\/p>\n<p>Sete experimentos no LHC usam detectores para analisar todo tipo de part\u00edculas produzidas pelas colis\u00f5es no acelerador. Esses experimentos s\u00e3o realizados por colabora\u00e7\u00f5es de cientistas de institutos de todo o mundo. Cada experimento \u00e9 distinto e caracterizado por seus detectores.<\/p>\n<p>Os maiores experimentos s\u00e3o o Atlas e o CMS, que usam detectores de uso geral para investigar uma grande variedade de perguntas da f\u00edsica. Os dois detectores foram projetados de forma independente para que se possa cruzar dados e confirmar novas descobertas que surgirem.<\/p>\n<p>J\u00e1 o Alice e o LHCb possuem detectores especializados para focar em fen\u00f4menos espec\u00edficos. Para processar os dados, o Atlas usa um sistema avan\u00e7ado de \u201cgatilho\u201d para informar ao detector quais eventos gravar e quais ignorar. Sistemas complexos de aquisi\u00e7\u00e3o de dados e computa\u00e7\u00e3o s\u00e3o usados para analisar os eventos de colis\u00e3o registrados.<\/p>\n<p>O grupo do Instituto de F\u00edsica da USP trabalha em duas frentes no Atlas: na an\u00e1lise de dados e na instrumenta\u00e7\u00e3o. Na lideran\u00e7a deste grupo, o professor Marco Leite d\u00e1 mais detalhes. \u201cA parte de instrumenta\u00e7\u00e3o envolve um dos subsistemas do Atlas que \u00e9 um dispositivo para medida de energia chamado calor\u00edmetro. Nesse calor\u00edmetro de arg\u00f4nio l\u00edquido, estamos trabalhando na atualiza\u00e7\u00e3o do sistema de sele\u00e7\u00e3o de eventos. Ele foi projetado para estudar a f\u00edsica da mat\u00e9ria que interage fortemente em densidades de energia extremas, onde uma fase de mat\u00e9ria chamada plasma de quarks-gl\u00faons se forma.<\/p>\n<p>Os pr\u00f3tons e n\u00eautrons s\u00e3o feitos de quarks ligados por outras part\u00edculas intermediadoras chamadas gl\u00faons. O quark nunca \u00e9 observado isoladamente: assim como os gl\u00faons, eles parecem estar permanentemente unidos e confinados dentro de part\u00edculas compostas. Isso \u00e9 conhecido como confinamento.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cO experimento Alice foi concebido com o objetivo principal de estudar colis\u00f5es entre n\u00facleos pesados, de chumbo, com o prop\u00f3sito de estudar esse novo estado da mat\u00e9ria chamado plasma de quarks e gl\u00faons. Os quarks sempre s\u00e3o observados confinados em pr\u00f3tons e n\u00eautrons. A ideia de colidir n\u00facleos pesados \u00e9 que, com muita energia, \u00e9 formado um sistema em que os quarks n\u00e3o est\u00e3o mais confinados. \u00c9 como se form\u00e1ssemos uma sopa desses quarks e gl\u00faons\u201d, explica Marcelo Munhoz, que lidera o grupo do Instituto de F\u00edsica da USP atuando no Alice.<\/p>\n<p>E para que estudar esse estado? Entre outras coisas, para conhecer a hist\u00f3ria do nosso Universo. \u201cSegundo a Teoria do Big Bang, em um momento da evolu\u00e7\u00e3o do Universo, quando toda a mat\u00e9ria e energia dele estavam concentradas em um volume muito pequeno, n\u00e3o t\u00ednhamos as part\u00edculas organizadas como hoje, e sim esse plasma de quarks e gl\u00faons. Por conta do\u00a0<i>upgrade<\/i>\u00a0do LHC, esse detector n\u00e3o seria capaz de medir a quantidade muito maior de colis\u00f5es que ser\u00e1 gerada, ent\u00e3o ele sofreu v\u00e1rias modifica\u00e7\u00f5es, entre elas a eletr\u00f4nica.
