O GMT vai gerar imagens dez vezes mais n\u00edtidas do que as produzidas pelo Telesc\u00f3pio Espacial Hubble e possibilitar\u00e1 o estudo de quest\u00f5es fundamentais em cosmologia, astrof\u00edsica e estudo de planetas fora do nosso Sistema Solar. <\/p>\n<p>A FAPESP integra a Organiza\u00e7\u00e3o para o Telesc\u00f3pio Gigante Magalh\u00e3es (GMTO), respons\u00e1vel pelo gerenciamento do projeto GMT, ao lado do Astronomy Australia Ltd., The Australian National University, Carnegie Institution for Science, Harvard University, Korea Astronomy and Space Science Institute, Smithsonian Institution, Texas A&amp;M University, The University of Arizona, The University of Chicago e The University of Texas at Austin. <\/p>\n<p>O design do telesc\u00f3pio combina sete espelhos, cada um deles com 8,4 metros de di\u00e2metro, para criar um \u00fanico telesc\u00f3pio de 25 metros de di\u00e2metro. <\/p>\n<p>Os espelhos gigantes est\u00e3o sendo desenvolvidos no Laborat\u00f3rio Richard F. Caris da Universidade do Arizona. Cada espelho \u00e9 polido com uma precis\u00e3o de 25 nan\u00f4metros ou meio milion\u00e9simo de cent\u00edmetro. <\/p>\n<p>Um dos espelhos gigantes j\u00e1 foi polido, atingindo as especifica\u00e7\u00f5es exatas. Tr\u00eas outros est\u00e3o sendo manufaturados. O telesc\u00f3pio iniciar\u00e1 as opera\u00e7\u00f5es com os primeiros espelhos em 2021, devendo atingir plena capacidade operacional na pr\u00f3xima d\u00e9cada. <\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Uma enorme quantidade de trabalho foi empregada para a fase de concep\u00e7\u00e3o do projeto e desenvolvimento dos espelhos gigantes que s\u00e3o o cora\u00e7\u00e3o do telesc\u00f3pio.
