Por conta da inven\u00e7\u00e3o, eles foram os vencedores de um desafio da USAID, um \u00f3rg\u00e3o do governo americano que lida com popula\u00e7\u00f5es que passam necessidades. <\/p>\n<p>O objetivo do desafio era criar um sistema simples e barato para fornecer \u00e1gua limpa para comunidades rurais em pa\u00edses em desenvolvimento. Pela vit\u00f3ria, eles receberam um pr\u00eamio de 125 mil d\u00f3lares. <\/p>\n<p>O sistema usa uma t\u00e9cnica chamada eletrodi\u00e1lise. Em uma explica\u00e7\u00e3o simples, o sal \u00e9 dissolvido na \u00e1gua e se transforma em part\u00edculas com cargas el\u00e9tricas positivas e negativas. Para remover essas part\u00edculas, o sistema usa membranas el\u00e9tricas que atraem as cargas como se fossem im\u00e3s. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cFunciona como um circuito el\u00e9trico. Os \u00edons s\u00e3o puxados para fora da \u00e1gua em dire\u00e7\u00e3o aos eletrodos\u201d, disse Natasha Wright, doutoranda no MIT e uma das criadoras do sistema, ao jornal Boston Globe. Ela ainda ressalta que apenas 5% da \u00e1gua \u00e9 perdida nesse processo. <\/p>\n<p>A dessaliniza\u00e7\u00e3o \u00e9 feita usando baterias, similares \u00e0s de carros e caminh\u00f5es. Elas s\u00e3o carregadas durante o dia utilizando pain\u00e9is que captam energia solar, o que d\u00e1 um car\u00e1ter ecol\u00f3gico \u00e0 inven\u00e7\u00e3o. <\/p>\n<p>Uma unidade do sistema \u00e9 capaz de abastecer \u00e1gua para irrigar uma pequena fazenda ou ent\u00e3o para atender \u00e0s necessidades de uma popula\u00e7\u00e3o de cinco mil pessoas. <\/p>\n<p>Apesar do foco em pa\u00edses em desenvolvimento, a inven\u00e7\u00e3o pode ser importante tamb\u00e9m para grandes \u00e1reas metropolitanas. <\/p>\n<p>Problemas graves com escassez de \u00e1gua assombram o estado de S\u00e3o Paulo desde o ano passado.
