A quantidade de energia gerada neste \u00faltimo experimento ainda foi min\u00fascula, se comparada \u00e0 quantidade de energia que foi usada para produzi-la. Ainda assim, o novo trabalho, publicado na revista Nature, supera alguns obst\u00e1culos importantes, segundo os cientistas. <\/p>\n<p>A fus\u00e3o consiste em unir \u00e1tomos de hidrog\u00eanio para formar \u00e1tomos de h\u00e9lio, como ocorre no interior do Sol &#8211; diferente da fiss\u00e3o nuclear, que consiste na quebra de \u00e1tomos pesados (por exemplo, de ur\u00e2nio), como se faz nas usinas de energia nuclear. Ambos os processos produzem energia, mas a fus\u00e3o tem uma s\u00e9rie de vantagens: entre elas, o fato de n\u00e3o produzir res\u00edduos radioativos e de utilizar como mat\u00e9ria-prima a subst\u00e2ncia mais abundante e inerte do universo, o hidrog\u00eanio, que pode ser facilmente extra\u00eddo da \u00e1gua do mar, por exemplo. <\/p>\n<p>O trabalho publicado na Nature traz os resultados de dois experimentos de fus\u00e3o realizados no Laborat\u00f3rio Nacional Lawrence Livermore, nos EUA, em que 192 fachos de laser foram direcionados para um cilindro de ouro, contendo uma pequena esfera de deut\u00e9rio e tr\u00edtio (duas formas de hidrog\u00eanio). A energia dos lasers fez com que essa esfera fosse reduzida de tamanho, em uma propor\u00e7\u00e3o equivalente \u00e0 de uma bola de basquete para uma ervilha, segundo uma das autoras da pesquisa, Debbie Callahan. <\/p>\n<p>Com isso, criaram-se as condi\u00e7\u00f5es necess\u00e1rias de press\u00e3o e temperatura para fundir \u00e1tomos de hidrog\u00eanio, como ocorre no n\u00facleo do Sol. A grande inova\u00e7\u00e3o do experimento foi que o combust\u00edvel (a bola de hidrog\u00eanio) emitiu mais energia do que absorveu; algo nunca demonstrado antes.
