Em 14 de mar\u00e7o, a New Scientist explicava por que \u00e9 t\u00e3o dif\u00edcil prever terremotos, como os sism\u00f3logos tentaram prever no passado, e quais promessas podem aumentar as chances de sucesso no futuro. <\/p>\n<p>\u00c9 poss\u00edvel prever terremotos? <\/p>\n<p>N\u00e3o \u2013pelo menos n\u00e3o a ponto de podermos dar um aviso adiantado em um hor\u00e1rio espec\u00edfico para uma localiza\u00e7\u00e3o espec\u00edfica que permita evacua\u00e7\u00e3o. No entanto, a maioria dos tremores ocorre em locais previs\u00edveis, as conhecidas zonas de falhas, como pudemos ver no megaevento ocorrido no Jap\u00e3o. <\/p>\n<p>Qu\u00e3o perto n\u00f3s estamos de prever terremotos? <\/p>\n<p>Em locais com um hist\u00f3rico de altas taxas de atividade, a chance de um tremor surgir em um per\u00edodo futuro de algumas d\u00e9cadas pode ser bem alta. \u201cN\u00f3s temos testes que dizem que no sul da Calif\u00f3rnia, pelos pr\u00f3ximos trintas anos, a chance de termos um terremoto de magnitude 7,5 ou maior \u00e9 de 38%\u201d, diz Thomas Jordan, diretor do Centro de Terremotos da Carolina do Sul e membro do Collaboratory for the Study of Earthquake Predictability. Se os mesmos modelos forem usados para calcular as chances de um terremoto no local na pr\u00f3xima semana, a precis\u00e3o cai para 0,02%, diz Jordan. <\/p>\n<p>Por que os terremotos mais violentos s\u00e3o t\u00e3o dif\u00edceis de prever? <\/p>\n<p>Previs\u00f5es confi\u00e1veis requerem precursores \u2013 algum tipo de sinal da terra que indique que um grande temor est\u00e1 chegando. O sinal tem que surgir apenas antes de grandes terremotos e tem que ocorrer antes de todos os grandes terremotos.
