Os dispositivos, que t\u00eam entre 5cm e 15cm e pesam poucos gramas, podem se mover rapidamente sobre uma superf\u00edcie aquosa. O nome do aut\u00f4mato \u00e9 STRIDE (Surface Tension-based Robotic Insect Dynamic Explorer) e utiliza a tens\u00e3o superficial do l\u00edquido como apoio, justamente como o fazem insetos naturais que se movem sobre l\u00e2minas d&#039;\u00e1gua. <\/p>\n<p>Rob\u00f4s assim poder\u00e3o detectar toxinas nocivas na \u00e1gua para os setores ambiental e militar, al\u00e9m de serem capazes de alcan\u00e7ar \u00e1reas antes inating\u00edveis em diversas aplica\u00e7\u00f5es. <\/p>\n<p>O projeto, iniciado em 2004, continua em andamento, com o objetivo de desenvolver dispositivos semelhantes cada vez mais \u00e1geis e eficientes em termos de consumo de energia. S\u00e3o utilizados microatuadores e motores de corrente cont\u00ednua para simular os movimentos dos insetos. Est\u00e3o sendo estudados diferentes materiais e formatos das pernas dos rob\u00f4s de modo a otimizar suas flutuabilidade e manobrabilidade. <\/p>\n<p>No <a target=\"_blank\" href=\"http:\/\/nanolab.me.cmu.edu\/projects\/waterstrider\/\">site oficial<\/a> do laborat\u00f3rio de nanotecnologia da universidade podem ser vistos tr\u00eas v\u00eddeos ilustrativos dos rob\u00f4s em a\u00e7\u00e3o. <\/p>\n<p>A tens\u00e3o superficial da \u00e1gua \u00e9 gerada por uma polariza\u00e7\u00e3o intr\u00ednseca \u00e0 mol\u00e9cula de H2O, fazendo com que ela atue como um dipolo el\u00e9trico, consequentemente gerando for\u00e7as de atra\u00e7\u00e3o que unem eletricamente as ditas mol\u00e9culas.
